Marion County is located in the northwestern part of the state of Alabama. Established on February 13, 1818, it was originally named Marion, after the Revolutionary War General Francis Marion. However, the name was changed to "Marion County" in 1841 to avoid confusion with the city of Marion in Perry County. Covering an area of approximately 744 square miles, the county borders six other counties in Alabama.

Marion County's early history is shaped by its Native American heritage, as the land has been inhabited for thousands of years by tribes such as the Chickasaw and Cherokee. The area was later explored by European settlers, mostly from North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Agriculture played a significant role in the county's development specifically, the cultivation of cotton. The county also thrived due to the robust growth of the logging and mining industries in the 19th century.

The county seat, Hamilton, was selected in 1881 after the previous county seat, Pikeville, was nearly destroyed by a tornado. Today, Marion County is known for its scenic beauty, with valuable natural resources and recreational areas. The county is home to a portion of the William B. Bankhead National Forest and various preserved Native American archaeological sites that provide insights into the region's ancient inhabitants.

One fun fact about Marion County is its annual Jerry Brown Arts Festival, held in Hamilton, which celebrates the Appalachian arts and culture. Also, a nationally recognized folk potter and Marion County native, Jerry Brown, is the inspiration for this event, having contributed significantly to the American folk art movement.
