Coconino County, located in the north-central region of Arizona, was established on February 19, 1891. It was created from the western part of Yavapai County and named after the Coconino Sandstone, a geological formation in the area. Coconino County is the second-largest county by land area in the United States, covering over 18,661 square miles. It is home to several significant natural and cultural landmarks, including the Grand Canyon, the Coconino National Forest, and numerous Native American tribes such as the Navajo, Hopi, and Havasupai.

Flagstaff, the county seat, was founded in 1881 along the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad route and incorporated in 1894. The city's development took off from then, eventually becoming an important railroad, lumber, and ranching hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over the years, Coconino County has evolved into a bustling center for tourism, education, and scientific research.
