Butte County, located in the northern part of California, was established on February 18, 1850, making it one of the original 27 counties of the state. The county encompasses approximately 1,677 square miles and has a diverse landscape comprised of fertile agricultural lands, Sierra Nevada foothills, and valleys. Its population, as of the 2020 census, is around 219,000, with its largest city and county seat being Oroville.

In the early 19th century, the region was primarily inhabited by the indigenous Maidu people. European-American exploration and settlement began in 1828, when fur trappers and traders arrived. However, it was the California Gold Rush in 1848 that truly transformed the area, as thousands of prospectors came seeking their fortune in the gold-filled creeks and rivers. The discovery of gold near Bidwell Bar led to important early settlements in the area.

Agriculture also plays a significant role in Butte County's history. The region became known for producing high-quality fruits, nuts, and rice. Today, agriculture remains a key economic driver for the county.

Butte County is home to several places of interest, including the Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, the Feather River Fish Hatchery, and the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area. One interesting and fun fact about Butte County is that it houses the tallest earth-filled dam in the United States: the Oroville Dam, which stands at approximately 770 feet high and was completed in 1968.
