Cheyenne County is located in the eastern plains of the great state of Colorado. It was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes, including the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux. The county was named after the Cheyenne Native Americans who were known for their hunting and warrior skills.

The history of Cheyenne County began to have a significant impact from the mid-19th century. In 1859, gold was discovered in Colorado, leading to an influx of settlers looking for new opportunities. At that time, the Colorado Territory was formed, and the original boundaries of Cheyenne County were established in 1861. However, the current county boundaries were officially formed on March 25, 1889.

The area experienced an economic boom from agriculture, and later on, the transcontinental railroad aided the growth of the county. Most of the early settlements in the county were based around the railroad, with Kit Carson and Cheyenne Wells being the most prominent towns. Presently, the county continues to thrive on agriculture as its primary economic driver.
