Crowley County, located in the southeastern part of Colorado, was established in 1911, having been carved out of the northern portion of Otero County. The county is named after John H. Crowley, a prominent pioneer and politician who played a crucial role in the early development of southeastern Colorado. The total landmass of Crowley County is estimated to be 800 square miles.

In the early days, the region was home to various Indigenous tribes, such as the Ute, Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Comanche. The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, including homesteaders and ranchers attracted by the cheap and fertile land.

Agriculture was, and still is, a significant industry in Crowley County. However, the region went through a significant transformation in the early 20th century when the Missouri Pacific (later the Colorado & Southern) Railroad extended its tracks into the county, spurring economic growth and facilitating transportation of goods throughout the region. The construction of the Colorado Canal System in the early 20th century was an essential development, as it allowed for extensive irrigation, improving farming productivity for the area.

The towns of Ordway, Sugar City, Crowley, and Olney Springs are the four primary settlements within the county. Ordway, which was established in 1900 by George N. Ordway, serves as the county seat.

One fun fact about Crowley County is that it has the lowest population density of any county within Colorado. Alongside the famous agricultural industry, the county is known for its serene landscapes, open spaces, picturesque vistas, and abundant wildlife, making it an ideal destination for bird-watching, hiking, and hunting enthusiasts.
