Gilpin County, located in the great state of Colorado, holds immense historical significance. It was founded in 1861, making it one of the original 17 counties in the Colorado Territory. Named after Colonel William Gilpin, the first territorial governor of Colorado, the county is situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, just west of the Denver metropolitan area.

The historical background of Gilpin County is deeply intertwined with the famous Colorado Gold Rush. In fact, this region played a pivotal role in the early development of Colorado due to its rich deposits of gold. The Gold Rush began in 1859, when John H. Gregory discovered gold along Clear Creek. This discovery led to a massive influx of prospectors and the establishment of numerous mining towns in the area, including Central City and Black Hawk.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mining continued to be the backbone of Gilpin County's economy. It became renowned for producing large amounts of gold, with some sources estimating that over 4 million troy ounces of gold were produced during its heyday. However, the mining industry declined in the mid-20th century as gold deposits were depleted.

Today, Gilpin County embraces its rich historical heritage, promoting tourism by offering a myriad of recreational and cultural activities that showcase its picturesque location and gold mining past. Visitors can explore Central City Opera House (built in 1878), Teller House, or try their luck at one of the area's modern casinos.

A fun fact about Gilpin County is that it is the second-least populous county in Colorado, with a population of just over 5,000 residents. Despite its small population, however, the county is known for its vibrant arts scene, numerous casinos, and the Central City Opera, one of the oldest professional opera companies in the United States, which hosts the Central City Opera Festival every summer.
