.La Plata County is located in the southwest corner of the great state of Colorado. Named after the La Plata River, which means "silver river" in Spanish, the county was established in February 1874 by the Colorado State Legislature. The area has a rich history, deeply rooted in Native American cultures, mining, and agriculture.
The ancestral Puebloans were among the first inhabitants of the region, leaving behind fascinating archaeological sites such as the Mesa Verde National Park. The Ute Indians arrived later in the 13th century, and their descendants still reside in the Southern Ute Indian Reservation, situated within the county.
The 1860s marked the beginning of the Colorado Gold Rush. Miners and settlers flocked to the region, drawn by the prospect of finding precious metals. Although gold was rare in La Plata County, silver, zinc, and lead mines flourished. Durango, the county seat, was founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan mining district. The railroad connected Silverton to Durango, vital for transporting minerals and supplies.
