Moffat County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Colorado, USA. Established on February 27, 1911, it was carved out of the western portion of Routt County. Moffat County is named in honor of David H. Moffat, a prominent Colorado financier, industrialist, and railroad tycoon who contributed significantly to the state's early economic development. The county seat is Craig, which was established in 1889 and later incorporated in 1908.

Moffat County's history is rooted in ranching and agriculture. Early settlers faced hardships, including harsh winters and conflicts with Native American tribes, while navigating the rugged landscape. In the 20th century, Moffat County's economy expanded to include coal mining, becoming an important source of revenue and employment.

One fun fact about this region is that Moffat County is home to one of North America's largest deposits of natural soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate. This mineral, found at the Green River Formation, has important industrial applications and is a significant factor in the economy of the area.
