Rio Blanco County, located in the great state of Colorado, was established on March 25th, 1889, when it was carved out of the neighboring Garfield County. The county covers 3,223 square miles in the state's northwestern region and is named after the White River (Ro Blanco in Spanish) that traverses it. Although the area has a rich Native American history dating back thousands of years, its modern development began in the late 19th century with the boom of the ranching and mining industries.

In 1878, the famed Meeker Massacre occurred within the county's current boundaries. Led by Ute Indian Chief Colorow, the Ute Indians rebelled against the forced assimilation policies introduced by Indian Agent Nathan Meeker, resulting in the deaths of Meeker and his ten male employees. This event played a significant role in the subsequent removal of the Ute tribe to reservations in Utah.

The early 20th century saw the introduction of sheep and cattle ranching in the area, while the late 20th century brought an increase in oil and natural gas production. Rio Blanco County's population has been bolstered by these industries, providing economic stability for its residents.

The county seat is Meeker, named after Nathan Meeker, and the second largest town is Rangely. Both communities have deep connections to the region's natural and cultural history.

One fun fact about Rio Blanco County is that it is home to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. This 235,214-acre wilderness area, both in Rio Blanco and Garfield counties, is famous for its unusual flat-topped mountains and is a popular destination for fishermen, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. It is also part of the White River National Forest, which contains the largest elk population in Colorado.
