Manatee County, located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, was established on January 9, 1855. The county was carved out from portions of Hillsborough County and named after the state's marine animal, the manatee. Manatee County is part of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area and its county seat and largest city is Bradenton.

The area was first explored by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century, with Hernando de Soto being one of the notable visitors. Following the European arrival, the region was occupied primarily by indigenous tribes like the Tocobaga and the Calusa. The Seminole Indians resided in the county until the US government forced their relocation after the Seminole Wars in the early 1800s.

The development of Manatee County began in the 1840s, with the arrival of settlers from the northern United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. Early industries included farming, fishing, cattle ranching, and the shipping of citrus fruits all contributing to the region's growth. During the 20th century, the area became famous for its dedication to horticultural research, particularly Tropicana Products, the citrus-juice producer headquartered in Bradenton. Today, the region is a bustling commercial and residential community with a diverse population.

Fun fact: Manatee County is home to the Village of the Arts, a vibrant live-work community located in Bradenton, and it is the largest arts district on the Gulf Coast. The village is an eclectic mix of early 20th-century buildings transformed into galleries, studios, workshops, and cafes fostering a thriving artist community.
