Monroe County, located in the great state of Florida, was established on July 3, 1823, as one of the early counties created after Florida was acquired by the United States in the Adams-Ons Treaty. The county is named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, who also served as Secretary of State when the treaty was signed. Monroe County is known for its tropical climate, sandy beaches, and coral reefs, which make it a popular vacation destination.

The largest city and county seat of Monroe County is Key West, a bustling hub of activity known for its historic district, lively atmosphere, and cruise ship port. The Florida Keys, a coral cay archipelago, are located within Monroe County, stretching over 120 miles from south of Miami down to Key West. The Florida Keys are home to the only living coral barrier reef in the United States, which makes it a hotspot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and marine life observation.

One fun fact about Monroe County is its place in literary history, as Key West has been home to notable authors like Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. Hemingway wrote some of his most famous works in Key West, such as "A Farewell to Arms" and "To Have and Have Not." Nowadays, visitors can tour his former residence, which is now the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and admire its lush gardens and a unique population of six-toed cats.
