Polk County, located in the central part of Florida, was established on February 8, 1861, and named in honor of the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk. The county is part of the Lakeland-Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area and encompasses an area of approximately 2,011 square miles.

Before becoming Polk County, the land had been home to indigenous people for thousands of years. The European contact began in the 16th century with Spanish explorers such as Ponce de Len and Hernando de Soto. The definitive settlement by Europeans started in the early 19th century when pioneers arrived, attracted by the favorable climate for agriculture and the rich soil.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Polk County witnessed significant economic growth, primarily due to the booming phosphate mining industry. Phosphate, a key component for fertilizers, was discovered in the area in 1881 and marked the beginning of a prosperous industry. Apart from phosphate mining, the county's economy also relied on citrus production and cattle ranching.

As the county developed further, transportation links improved, and numerous railroad lines were built, connecting Polk County to other key cities in Florida. In addition, the establishment of military training bases during World War II led to a population surge as soldiers and their families moved to the region.

Fun Fact: Polk County is known as the "Water Ski Capital of the World" due to its numerous freshwater lakes and the abundance of professional water skiers who reside and train in the area. Cypress Gardens, a famous water ski park established in 1936, helped popularize the sport and attracted thousands of tourists every year. Even though the park closed in 2009, it has left a lasting impact on the county's identity as a hub for water skiing.
