Putnam County is located in the northeastern part of Florida, USA, and was created on January 13, 1849. It was named after Benjamin A. Putnam, a prominent lawyer, soldier, and statesman, who also served as the first president of the Florida Historical Society. The county's land comprises an area of 827 square miles, and its county seat is Palatka.

The area of Putnam County was originally inhabited by the Timucuan Indians. During the 16th century, the Timucua came into contact with Europeans, leading to a decline in their population due to diseases and conflicts. The first European settlers arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries, claiming the territory for Spain. In 1821, Florida became a United States territory, and eventually achieved statehood in 1845.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Putnam County was a hub for trade and transportation, particularly due to its position along the St. Johns River. The river provided a critical route for steamboats, which facilitated commerce in the region. The county's economy also thrived due to its robust lumber, citrus, and tourism industries.

One fun fact about Putnam County is that it is home to the oldest planted grapefruit tree in the world. This tree, known as the "Pond Lily," was planted from a seed in 1850 near Palatka and still stands today. It has been officially recognized as the oldest by both the Florida State Horticultural Society and the Florida House of Representatives.
