Bryan County is located in the coastal plain region of Georgia in the United States. It was established on December 19, 1793, and named in honor of Jonathan Bryan, an American Revolutionary War patriot and an early proponent for the state's independence from British rule.

The region's history predates the establishment of the county; it contains archaeological evidence of Native American habitation dating back as far as 11,000 years ago. Before European settlement, the area was home to the Guale and later the Muskogean-speaking Yamacraw tribe. In 1733, British General James Oglethorpe established the town of Savannah, building Fort Argyle in the western part of what is now Bryan County to protect the new settlement from potential attacks by the Spanish and the French.

During the American Civil War, the county was involved in several military operations, primarily due to its proximity to Fort McAllister, which played a strategic role in the defense of Savannah. In 1864, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman captured Fort McAllister, marking the end of his "March to the Sea" and subsequently, the fall of Savannah.

Today, Bryan County is comprised of two incorporated cities, Richmond Hill and Pembroke, which serve as its major commercial and residential centers. The county is known for its rich history, beautiful coastal landscapes, and strong sense of community. One fun fact about Bryan County is that it was the home of automobile magnate Henry Ford from the 1920s to the 1940s. Ford established a winter home in Richmond Hill, developed a strong interest in the area, and made significant contributions to the community, including building schools and a chapel.
