DeKalb County is a county located in the northeastern part of the great state of Georgia, United States. It was founded on December 9, 1822, and was named after Baron Johann de Kalb, a Bavarian-born, French-trained German soldier who served as a major general during the American Revolutionary War. The county, which is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, has its county seat in the city of Decatur.

In the early 1800s, DeKalb County was primarily an agricultural community with cotton being the main cash crop. The arrival of railroads in the mid-19th century fueled rapid growth, and the area started to transform into a commercial and industrial hub. The Georgia General Assembly approved the initial charter for the establishment of DeKalb County on December 9, 1822. In 1853, the city of Atlanta was initially part of both DeKalb and Fulton counties, but was later removed from DeKalb County in 1859, leaving Decatur as the county seat.

Throughout the 20th century, the county continued to grow and evolve, and today, it is a diverse and thriving region. DeKalb County is home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters, Emory University, Agnes Scott College, and various museums and parks.

Fun Fact: Stone Mountain, located in DeKalb County, is the site of one of the world's largest exposed granite monoliths featuring a memorial carving honoring the Confederate leaders: President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The park surrounding the mountain is a popular recreational destination, offering attractions like the Skyride, a scenic train ride, and annual events such as the Laser Light Show Spectacular.
