Elbert County is a county located in the northeastern part of the great state of Georgia, USA. Established on December 10, 1790, the county was named in honor of Samuel Elbert, a Revolutionary War hero and later Governor of Georgia. Covering an area of approximately 374 square miles, Elbert County is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Combined Statistical Area.

The area was inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years, with the Cherokee and Creek tribes as dominant groups before European settlers began to establish colonies in North America. The land that would become Elbert County was originally part of Wilkes County, one of the eight original counties created in Georgia in 1777.

Elberton, the county's largest city, was founded in 1803 and became an important transportation hub in the state due to its location near the convergence of two important rivers: the Broad River and the Savannah River. Elberton is often referred to as the "Granite Capital of the World" due to its vast granite deposits, which have made the area well-known for its production of granite monuments and memorials.

A fun fact about Elbert County is that it is home to the mysterious Georgia Guidestones, a granite monument erected in 1980 featuring inscriptions in eight languages, detailing a set of ten guidelines for humanity. The identity of the person or group responsible for the creation and placement of the monument remains unknown, and the Georgia Guidestones have become a point of curiosity and intrigue for visitors and locals alike.
