Fulton County, located in the north-central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia, was established on December 20, 1853. It was created by combining two existing counties; Campbell and Milton County, as an effort to consolidate Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Fulton County is named after Robert Fulton, an ingenious engineer, and inventor credited with the development of the first commercially successful steamboat in America known as the Clermont.

Covering 529 square miles, Fulton County is home to the vibrant city of Atlanta, which serves as its county seat and the state capital. Over the years, the region has seen rapid population growth and development. It played a significant role in the Civil War due to its strategic location and railroads. During the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th century, Fulton County became an essential center for activism and many prominent civil rights leaders emerged from the area, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A fun fact about Fulton County: The famous beverage company Coca-Cola was founded in Atlanta in 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton, a local pharmacist.
