It was created by combining two existing counties; Campbell and Milton County, as an effort to consolidate Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Fulton County is named after Robert Fulton, an ingenious engineer, and inventor credited with the development of the first commercially successful steamboat in America known as the Clermont.
