Lamar County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on November 3, 1920. Its creation was through the partition of a portion of Monroe County. The county was named in honor of Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, a prominent figure in Georgia, who served as a congressman, senator, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior during his lifetime.

Barnesville, the county seat of Lamar County, became an essential transportation and commercial center in the 1800s, and was nicknamed the "Buggy Capital of the South" as a result of its booming buggy manufacturing industry. The county's economic activity largely revolved around agriculture, with cotton farming being prevalent.
