Monroe County is located in the great state of Georgia and was established on May 15, 1821. The county was named after the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, who served from 1817 to 1825. The county's creation was a result of the cession of Creek Native American land to Georgia, which was called the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1821. Forsyth, founded in 1823, is the county seat and named after John Forsyth, Georgia governor and U.S. congressman.

During the Civil War, Monroe County contributed to the Southern war effort through troops and supplies, but the county remained relatively untouched by direct military action. One notable incident was the raid by General Edward Dorr Tracy Jr. on a Union supply train, which resulted in the capture of 900 Union prisoners and the destruction of the train.

Monroe County experienced significant growth during the late 19th century, thanks to the arrival of the railroad. Local industries sprang up, including agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing.

A fun fact about Monroe County is that it is home to the Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site, where visitors can explore a preserved 19th-century cotton plantation. The site allows for a glimpse into the lives of plantation owners and the enslaved people who labored there during that era.
