Telfair County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 10, 1807. Named after Edward Telfair, a three-term Governor of Georgia and delegate to the Continental Congress, the county played a significant role in the region's history. It is situated in the central-southern part of Georgia and its county seat is McRae-Helena.

Primarily an agricultural county, Telfair County's economy in its early years was mainly based on cotton farming. With the expansion of railroads in the county during the mid-1800s, it experienced growth in terms of trade and the movement of goods. In addition, the introduction of new agricultural practices and other industries, such as timber and turpentine production, diversified the local economy.

Like many southern counties, Telfair County witnessed turmoil during the American Civil War, with residents having to deal with the economic and social consequences of the conflict. The county experienced reconstruction and growth in the years following the war.

Throughout the 20th century, the county continued to evolve and adapt with the influx of new residents, industries, and economic challenges. Telfair County is now known for its agricultural production, beautiful landscapes, and historic sites.

A fun fact about Telfair County is that it is home to the largest population of wild Georgia Sandhill Cranes, which can be seen at the Ocmulgee Wild Management Area. This beautiful bird species is a treasured part of the local ecosystem and attracts bird-watchers from around the region.
