Terrell County is located in the southwestern region of the U.S. state of Georgia. Established on February 16, 1856, the county was named in honor of Dr. William Terrell, a prominent physician and politician who had served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1817-1821. The county seat is Dawson, which was incorporated in 1857 and named after William C. Dawson, a distinguished soldier and statesman.

Terrell County played a significant role in agriculture during the 19th and early 20th centuries, boasting of bountiful crops of cotton, peanuts, and corn. The area was also known for producing pecans, peaches, and grapes. The presence of the Flint River and several creeks allowed fertile soil for farming, and in 1895, the Atlantic & Albany Railway contributed to the growth of the county as goods could easily be transported to more distant markets.

The county's economy faced challenges after the boll weevil infestation in the early 20th century, which devastated cotton crops, and farmers began diversifying into peanut and corn cultivation. Despite these setbacks, the county continued to push forward into the modern era.

Today, Terrell County remains replete with historical landmarks, such as the Terrell County Courthouse, which was designed by the renowned architect Edward Columbus Hosford and built in 1912. Terrell County is also home to the Andrew Jackson Davis House, a historic plantation dating back to the 1850s, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fun Fact: Terrell County was the setting for the 1968 Academy Award-winning film based on Carson McCullers' novel, "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter." The movie was filmed in several locations throughout the county, including Dawson, which speaks to the region's rich cultural history and charming Southern atmosphere.
