Tift County is located in the southern region of the great state of Georgia. Established on August 17, 1905, it was created from portions of Berrien, Irwin, and Worth Counties. The county was named in honor of Nelson Tift, a prominent businessman, and politician from Albany, Georgia, who was involved in the founding of the city and served as its first mayor.

Tifton, the county seat, was founded in 1872 by Capt. Henry Harding Tift, the nephew of Nelson Tift. The city developed around the construction of the Brunswick and Albany Railroad, which significantly contributed to the growth of the region. Tifton became a major center of trade and agriculture, primarily focusing on timber, turpentine production, and naval stores.

Throughout the years, Tift County has continued to grow and diversify. Agriculture remains a vital part of the local economy with cotton, peanuts, and various fruits and vegetables being the primary crops.

One fun fact about Tift County is the presence of the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village. This living history museum showcases the rich agricultural heritage of Georgia's rural past. The 95-acre site features various interactive exhibits, including a traditional 19th-century farming community, a steam-powered cotton gin, and a historic farmstead that offers visitors a unique glimpse into the region's history.
