Towns County, located in the great state of Georgia, was created on March 6, 1856, from parts of Rabun and Union Counties. Named in honor of George Washington Bonaparte Towns, who served as the Governor of Georgia from 1847 to 1851, the county is situated in the northeastern part of the state, bordering North Carolina. Its county seat is the town of Hiawassee, which takes its name from a Cherokee word meaning "meadow."

The area is known for its scenic beauty, with the county encompassing portions of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Attractions such as Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia, and Lake Chatuge draw tourists who come to enjoy hiking, fishing, and boating among other recreational activities.

A fun fact about Towns County is that it hosts the annual Georgia Mountain Fair, a popular event that celebrates traditional Appalachian culture with live music, arts and crafts, food, and various exhibits. The fair has been held each summer since 1950 at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee, attracting visitors from near and far to experience a taste of mountain life.
