Ringgold County is located in the southern part of the state of Iowa in the United States. It was formed on February 15, 1847, and was named in honor of Maj. Samuel Ringgold, a hero of the Battle of Palo Alto fought during the Mexican-American War. However, it wasn't until 1855 that the county was officially organized, with Mount Ayr chosen as the county seat.

Initially, the area was inhabited by the Meskwaki and the Sac tribes, who engaged in farming and hunting. In the early 1800s, the first European explorers and traders arrived, and the local Native American tribes relinquished their claims on the lands through a series of treaties with the United States government. By 1850, the first settlers moved to the region, most of whom were farmers.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county experienced growth with the establishment of several towns and communities, such as Tingley, Kellerton, and Ellston. The region was mainly focused on agriculture, with small family farms producing corn, oats, hay, and raising livestock.

Today, Ringgold County remains predominantly rural and agricultural. However, it has also developed a strong sense of community and offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, such as hunting, fishing, and camping.

Fun Fact: Ringgold County is home to the Dragoon Trace Nature Center, which offers visitors a chance to explore the history and natural beauty of the area. It derives its name from the Dragoon Trace, a historic trail used by the U.S. Army Dragoons in the 1830s and 1840s, which passed through the region.
