Established on January 15, 1849, it was named in honor of General Zachary Taylor, an American military leader who went on to become the 12th President of the United States. The county was created from portions of Benton, Linn, Polk, and Jackson Counties. Bedford is the county seat of Taylor County, and the area encompasses roughly 535 square miles.
