Butte County, located in the great state of Idaho, was established on February 6, 1917. The county is situated in the southeastern part of Idaho, covering an area of 2,234 square miles. The county was formed from parts of Bingham, Blaine, and Jefferson Counties, and its name is derived from the volcanic buttes that dot its landscape. The county seat is the city of Arco, which was established in the early 1900s as a railroad town.

One of the key historical events in Butte County was the establishment of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), which significantly impacted the region's development. Established in 1949, the INL has played a crucial role in the advancement of nuclear energy and technology. It was at the INL that the first nuclear-generated electricity was produced in 1951, and the first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, had its prototype reactor tested in 1953.

Butte County is also home to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, which is characterized by its unique volcanic formations and lava fields. Established in 1924, the monument encompasses more than 1,100 square miles and attracts thousands of visitors annually.

A fun fact about Butte County is that the city of Arco was the first city in the world to be lit by nuclear power on July 17, 1955, which was produced by the nearby experimental reactor, BORAX-III. This historic event further highlights the significant role that the region played in the development of nuclear technology.
