Clearwater County, located in the north-central region of the great state of Idaho, was established on February 27, 1911, and named after the Clearwater River, which runs through the county. The county seat lies at Orofino, a name that translates to "fine gold" in Spanish.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was home to the Nez Perce Native American tribe. In the early 19th century, the first explorers, like Lewis and Clark, passed through the area. The discovery of gold around Pierce in 1860 attracted many settlers, leading to the establishment of the first white settlement in present-day Idaho.

The county played a significant role in the timber industry when, in the early 20th century, the construction of a railroad from Lewiston to Stites and Kooskia led to the growth of local lumber mills. Clearwater County also had a notable military presence during World War II, with a Naval base being operated in Orofino from 1942 to 1945, and an airfield being built in the nearby region.

One fun fact about Clearwater County is that it is the official gateway to the Dworshak Dam and Reservoir, the third tallest dam in the United States, completed in 1973. The dam spans the Clearwater River and provides flood control, hydropower, and recreational opportunities for the region.
