Gem County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Idaho. It was created by the Idaho Legislature on March 15, 1915, and officially organized on April 4, 1915. The county was named "Gem" due to the large number of valuable minerals, such as garnets, that could be found in the region. It covers an area of approximately 566 square miles.

Emmett serves as the county seat and is the largest city within Gem County. The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, like the Shoshone and Bannock, who lived there for centuries prior to the arrival of European settlers. In the late 1800s, European-Americans began to settle in the area, primarily for agriculture and mining.

The primary industries that have shaped the economy of Gem County over the years include farming, ranching, lumber, and mining. Agriculture remains a significant part of the local economy, especially the cultivation of fruits like cherries, apricots, and plums.

Fun Fact: One interesting attraction in Gem County is Freezeout Hill, named after a group of settlers who got stranded on the hill during a severe winter storm in 1864. The hill now has a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Emmett Valley, offering visitors a beautiful panorama of the landscape.
