Nez Perce County is located in the north-central region of the great state of Idaho. Established on February 4, 1864, the county has a rich historical background, particularly connected to the indigenous Nez Perce Tribe. The county's name is derived from a French phrase meaning "pierced nose," which incorrectly referred to the tribe's facial piercings. However, this tribal custom was improperly attributed to the Nez Perce.

The Nez Perce people played a significant role in the development of trade and transportation in the region. When the Lewis and Clark expedition arrived in the area in 1805, they built a valuable relationship with the Nez Perce Tribe, which ultimately helped guide and support their journey. The tribe initially welcomed European settlers until the Nez Perce War in 1877, when conflict arose over territories and treaties.

Gold was discovered in 1860 in the Orofino Creek, leading to a gold rush that attracted thousands of prospectors and settlers to the region. As a result, Nez Perce County flourished, and its economy expanded into areas such as agriculture, timber, and light manufacturing.

Lewiston, the county seat, was established in 1861 and is Idaho's only seaport, with access to the Pacific Ocean via the Snake and Columbia Rivers. This seaport makes Lewiston and Nez Perce County unique, as they serve as important hubs for trade and transportation within the state.

Fun fact: Lewiston briefly served as Idaho's capital from the territory's establishment in 1863 until 1865, when the capital was moved to Boise in response to the gold rush in the south.
