Edwards County is situated in the southeastern part of the state of Illinois. Established on November 28, 1814, the county was named in honor of Ninian Edwards, the governor of the Illinois Territory from 1809 to 1818, and later a U.S. senator and the third governor of Illinois. The county seat and largest city is Albion.

Edwards County has historically been an agricultural region, with its fertile lands supporting a variety of crops and livestock. The area experienced considerable growth during the 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to the establishment of railroad systems that provided transport for both people and goods. However, the county's population has decreased over the years, and as of the 2020 census, it had approximately 6,295 residents.

One fun fact about Edwards County is that it is home to the Bonpas Creek, which was originally called the "Bon Pas" or "Good Step" by French explorers. This creek flows for approximately 60 miles through the county, providing water for both agriculture and recreation. The name of the creek reflects the region's early history of French exploration and fur-trading in the area during the 17th and 18th centuries.
