Franklin County is located in the southern part of the state of Illinois, USA. Established on January 2, 1818, it was named in honor of the American statesman, scientist, and founding father, Benjamin Franklin. The county seat, Benton, was named after the prominent Missourian and U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, who played a key role in the area's development.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Shawnee and Piankashaw. European settlers, mostly from the southern states, began arriving in the late 18th and early 19th centuries due to the rich soil and abundant wildlife. As these settlers moved into the region, it ignited the Black Hawk War in 1832, which marked a turning point in Illinois' territorial expansion.

Coal mining was a significant industry in Franklin County from the late 19th century up to the mid-20th century. The county saw a massive influx of migrants due to the mining boom, which contributed to its rapid population growth. The economy has since diversified, with the manufacturing, agricultural, and service sectors playing a more prominent role.

One fun fact about this region is that Benton, the county seat, was the location of the last public hanging in Illinois in 1928. The hanging of Charles Birger, a notorious gangster and bootlegger, prompted Illinois to switch to using the electric chair for capital punishment later that year, with the electric chair eventually being replaced by lethal injection in 1990.

Today, Franklin County offers a mix of natural beauty, historical charm, and modern amenities, making it an interesting destination for both visitors and residents alike.
