Hardin County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Illinois. Established on March 2, 1839, it was named in honor of Colonel John J. Hardin, a politician and military leader who served in the Illinois House of Representatives and the United States Congress. Colonel Hardin also played a significant role during the Black Hawk War and the Mexican-American War before his death in 1847.

The county has a rich history, with Native American presence in the region dating back to the early Archaic Period, around 8000 BCE. The area was settled by European pioneers, predominantly from Kentucky and Tennessee, in the early 19th century. The Ohio River, which forms Hardin County's southern border, has been both a transportation route and a major factor in the development of the county.

One unique aspect of Hardin County's history is the infamous regional rivalry between the towns of Cave-In-Rock and Rosiclare. The two towns experienced a fierce dispute over their respective mineral resources during the early 20th century; Cave-In-Rock was known for its natural cave and the historical presence of pirates and outlaws, while Rosiclare boasted fluorite mines that earned it the title of "Fluorspar Capital of the World."

A fun fact about Hardin County is that it features the Cave-In-Rock State Park, which contains a large limestone cave created by the Ohio River over thousands of years. The cave has been used for various purposes over the years, from a hideout for pirates in the late 18th century to a backdrop for several movies in modern times.
