Lawrence County is located in southeastern Illinois and was established on January 16, 1821. It was named after Captain James Lawrence, a naval officer who gained prominence during the War of 1812. The county seat is Lawrenceville.

The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, and European settlers arrived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The county, as a part of the great state of Illinois, played a vital role in the transportation and industrial revolutions due to its advantageous location along the Wabash River.

One of the early developments in the county was the Old Lawrenceville-Col. Baker's Ferry Toll Road, which was constructed to allow farmers to transport their products to the markets more efficiently. The route was popular, and it later became a part of the National Road or Highway 40, which was essential in connecting the east and west coasts of the United States.

Agriculture has always been a significant part of Lawrence County's economy. The region's nutrient-rich soil, coupled with its favourable climate, contributed to its growth as a thriving agricultural hub. Farming mainly comprises corn and soybean production, and the county is ranked among the top crop-producing regions in Illinois.
