Piatt County, located in the central region of the great state of Illinois, was established on January 27, 1841. Named in honor of James A. Piatt, a pioneer settler and land owner who arrived in the area around 1828, the county was formed from a portion of Macon County. The county's seat, Monticello, was chosen by James A. Piatt and is named after Thomas Jefferson's famous Monticello in Virginia.

During the early years of settlement, the economic activity of Piatt County mostly centered around agriculture, primarily corn, wheat, and timber production. Later, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the discovery of oil in the region led to the brief emergence of the oil industry, but it subsided over time as reserves depleted. The county also had a number of significant railway lines traversing through it, making it an important transportation and trade hub.

A fun fact about Piatt County is that it is home to the Robert Allerton Park, a 1,517-acre nature reserve and public park that features unique natural landscapes, over 100 sculptures, and a historic Georgian-style mansion, known as "The Farms." In 2007, USA Today declared this park one of the "Top 10 Places to Get Married" in the USA. Given its rich history and natural beauty, Piatt County is a vibrant and important part of Illinois.
