Stark County, located in the great state of Illinois, was founded on March 2, 1839. The county was named in honor of General John Stark, a distinguished officer in the American Revolutionary War, who is best known for his service at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. It is situated in the Northwest part of the state and covers an area of approximately 288 square miles. The county seat is Toulon.

One of Stark County's earliest settlements was established in 1829 by Isaac B. Essex near the present-day city of Wyoming. As more people arrived in the region, communities began to develop around gristmills, blacksmith shops, and other businesses essential to the local, predominantly agricultural, economy. During the mid-19th century, the county experienced growth as railroads expanded and connected the region to broader markets.

Stark County is composed of small towns and rural landscapes, with Toulon, Wyoming, and Bradford as its most prominent communities. The county's population peaked at around 10,000 residents in the late 19th century but has since gradually declined, with the 2020 census putting the population at around 5,000.

Fun Fact: Stark County is home to the Rock Island Trail State Park, which is a scenic 26-mile recreational trail that was once a railroad line. This beautiful trail offers opportunities for hiking, biking, and experiencing the local flora and fauna, as well as a glimpse into the county's transportation history.
