Woodford County, located in the great state of Illinois, has an interesting and rich historical background. Established on February 27, 1841, it was split from a part of Tazewell County and named in honor of General William Woodford, who served as a Brigadier General in the Illinois militia during the War of 1812.

Before the arrival of European settlers in the early 1800s, the area now known as Woodford County was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Kickapoo and Potawatomi. The first European settlers came mostly from the eastern states and Europe, including Germany and Ireland, and built up the county's agriculture and mining industries. The county's location within the Illinois River Valley meant that it had fertile soil, which was ideal for farming, and played a crucial role in the growth of its agricultural sector.

The county seat is Eureka, which is the largest city in Woodford County. Eureka College, founded in 1855, is located in the city and is known to be the smallest college in the United States to have graduated a future U.S president. This college is most famous for being the alma mater of former President Ronald Reagan, who graduated in 1932.

A fun fact about Woodford County is that it is home to the Metamora Courthouse State Historic Site, which is one of the only two original courthouses remaining from the Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where Abraham Lincoln practiced law between 1845 and 1858. This courthouse now serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the history of law and legal practice during the mid-1800s.
