Fountain County, located in the western region of the great state of Indiana, was officially established on December 30, 1825. The county was named in honor of James Fontaine, a Frenchman who fought alongside American forces in the American Revolutionary War. In 1826, the county seat was established at Covington, a city which remains the seat to this day.

Early settlers in the area were primarily of English, Irish, and Scottish descent, and they were soon joined by Germans, Swedes, and other European immigrants. Agriculture was the primary industry in the late 1800s, with corn, wheat, and livestock production serving as the foundation of the county's economic growth.

During the Industrial Revolution, Fountain County became home to several thriving industries, including coal mining and iron production. The county also housed several brick-making factories, with the presence of high-quality clay deposits in the area.

One interesting fact about Fountain County is the presence of one of the region's oldest continually operating newspapers, the Fountain County Neighbor, which was first published in 1852. Additionally, the county is well known for its beautiful covered bridges, such as the Rob Roy Covered Bridge and the Wallace Covered Bridge, which have become local landmarks and popular tourist attractions. The Fountain County Courthouse, built in 1936-1937, is also an architectural gem on the National Register of Historic Places.
