The county covers an area of approximately 414 square miles.

Initial settlements in Grant County were made along the Mississinewa River, and its fertile land proved ideal for agriculture. In the mid-to-late 19th century, with the development of railroads, Grant County experienced growth in both its population and economy. The county played a significant role in Indiana's natural gas boom during the late 1800s, which fueled industrial development in the area.
