Parke County is located in the western part of Indiana and was established on January 9, 1821. It was named in honor of Captain Benjamin Parke, who served in the War of 1812 and was a delegate to the U.S. Congress from the Indiana Territory. The county seat is Rockville, a charming town that was founded in 1824.

Parke County's geographical location placed it between the Wabash River and Sugar Creek, giving the area a diverse landscape, fertile land, and an abundance of water resources. This attracted many settlers, especially farmers, to the region in the early 19th century. The area was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, such as the Miami and Wea, before European settlers arrived.

Due to the rapid growth of the agricultural industry, transportation became increasingly important, leading to the construction of numerous covered bridges in the county during the 19th and early 20th centuries. As of now, Parke County is famously known as the "Covered Bridge Capital of the World" due to its 31 covered bridges, which is the highest number of covered bridges in any county in the United States.

One fun fact about Parke County is that it hosts the annual Parke County Covered Bridge Festival, which takes place every October. The festival celebrates the county's rich history and its iconic covered bridges, attracting thousands of visitors from across the country. The event features a variety of activities, including guided tours of the bridges, craft shows, food vendors, and live entertainment.
