Wayne County, located in the eastern part of the great state of Indiana, was officially established on November 27, 1810. The county is named after General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, a renowned soldier of the American Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War. The county seat is the city of Richmond, which was founded in 1806 by North Carolina Quakers, Jeremiah Cox and Joseph Wickersham.

The area's history starts with the indigenous people living there, including the Miami and the Shawnee tribes. European-American settlement began in the early 19th century as a result of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. In 1803, the Indiana Territory was formed, and Wayne County was part of the newly formed territory.

As a Quaker community, Richmond and Wayne County were important stops along the Underground Railroad, giving refuge to escaped slaves en route to Canada. The Levi Coffin House, located in Fountain City, was known as the "Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad," providing sanctuary to more than 2,000 fugitives.

Wayne County also played a key role in the innovation and growth of the American automotive industry in the early years of the 20th century. Richmond became home to several automobile manufacturers, like Westcott, Wayne Works, and Davis. By 1910, 10% of all Indiana's automobiles were produced in Wayne County.

A fun fact about Wayne County is that it is home to the Gennett Records Starr Piano Company, established in Richmond in 1872. The company manufactured pianos and later became a successful record label in the 1920s. Gennett Records played a vital role in recording early blues and jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Bix Beiderbecke.
