Allen County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Kansas. It was officially established on August 25, 1855, and named in honor of William Allen, a United States Senator from Ohio who supported Kansas becoming a free state. The county covers a total area of 505 square miles, with the city of Iola serving as its county seat.

The region holds great historical significance, as it was once a prominent hunting ground for Native American tribes such as the Osage and Kanza. European settlers began to arrive in the area in the 1850s, which led to the founding of different towns and settlements throughout the county. The county played an important role during the Bleeding Kansas era, a series of violent events that escalated tensions between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions.

The development of the railroad in the latter half of the 19th century greatly impacted the growth of Allen County. The arrival of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad (MKT) in the 1870s connected Iola with trading centers and spurred the growth of the local economy. This period also saw the emergence of industries such as agriculture, oil production, and natural gas extraction, boosting employment and attracting more settlers to the region.

One fun fact about Allen County is that it is home to the world's largest town square, located in the city of Iola. The square is 3.5 acres in size, and it features a picturesque park, shops, and other local attractions, making it a popular spot for community events and gatherings.
