Atchison County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on August 25, 1855, and has a rich and interesting history. The county was named in honor of David Rice Atchison, a U.S. Senator from Missouri and fervent pro-slavery advocate, who ironically never set foot in the county during his lifetime. Situated in the northeastern part of the state, Atchison County covers an area of approximately 434 square miles and has a modest population of just over 16,000 people.

Atchison County played a significant role during the 19th century. The city of Atchison, which is the county seat, was founded in 1854 and quickly became an important hub for river and railroad transportation due to its position along the Missouri River. Atchison served as a launching point for westward-bound migrants during the westward expansion of the United States, with many travelers embarking on the famous Oregon Trail and later, on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroads.

One fun fact about Atchison County is that it was the birthplace of the famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Born on July 24, 1897, in the city of Atchison, she went on to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. Today, the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum stands in her honor in Atchison, offering visitors a glimpse into her life and contributions to aviation history.
