Comanche County, located in the great state of Kansas, has a rich historical background. Established on February 27, 1867, the county was named after the Comanche Native American tribe, who were known for their skill in horseback riding and strong warrior tradition. It occupies a total area of 790 square miles within the High Plains region, with the city of Coldwater serving as the county seat.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Apache, Pawnee, and the Comanche for whom the county was named. In the 19th century, the area attracted settlers due to the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted 160 acres of land to any eligible American citizen who would settle, farm, and improve the land within a five-year period.

Comanche County experienced a growth in population and development, particularly with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. The railroad facilitated easier transportation of goods and people, and helped in establishing several towns in the area.

In the early 20th century, oil was discovered in Comanche County, leading to a short-lived oil boom. Today, the county is primarily engaged in agricultural activities, with wheat and cattle ranching as the leading industries.

A fun fact about Comanche County is that it is home to the Big Basin Prairie Reserve, which consists of the Big Basin and the St. Jacob's Well. The Big Basin is an intriguing natural feature - a mile-wide, 100-foot deep sinkhole formed by the dissolution of underlying salt and gypsum deposits. St. Jacob's Well, located within the Big Basin, is a freshwater spring that remains a popular destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts.
