Crawford County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Kansas, was established on February 13, 1867. The county was named in honor of Samuel J. Crawford, the third governor of Kansas, who served from 1865 to 1868. It covers an area of 593 square miles and has a population of approximately 39,000 people. The county seat and largest city is Pittsburg.

The area was originally inhabited by the Osage Native American tribe who lived in the region until European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. Its rich coal deposits led to the rapid growth of mining during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the resulting population growth led to the creation of numerous towns and thriving communities.

One of the area's notable features is the Kansas Technology Center, part of Pittsburg State University. This cutting-edge facility supports degree programs in fields such as automotive technology, electronics, engineering technology, and graphics and imaging technologies. Students and faculty work on a variety of projects, including the construction of solar-powered vehicles and manufacturing advanced composite materials.

A fun fact about Crawford County is that the city of Pittsburg is home to the annual Little Balkans Days festival, which celebrates the region's diverse immigrant history. The festival highlights the contributions of various ethnic groups, such as the Italians, Germans, and Eastern Europeans, who had a significant impact on the growth and development of the county during the coal mining boom. Little Balkans Days include music, food, arts and crafts, and various family-friendly events that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the area.
