Kiowa County, located in the southwestern part of the great state of Kansas, was founded on March 23, 1872, and named after the Kiowa Native American tribe that had previously inhabited the area. It spans approximately 723 square miles and its county seat is Greensburg.

The Kiowa Native American tribe played an integral role in the history of Kiowa County. Before European settlers arrived, the Kiowa people were known for their nomadic lifestyle, as they followed buffalo herds for sustenance.

The region was initially explored by European settlers during the Coronado Expedition of 1541, when Spanish conquistador Francisco Vzquez de Coronado searched for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. It wasn't until the 19th century that more permanent settlements began in the area, as railroads expanded westward, making travel and transportation easier for settlers.

In addition to the influence of the railroads, agriculture has long played an important role in Kiowa County's economy. Homesteaders who came seeking land and a new life contributed to the development of the region's farming culture. Livestock, wheat, and corn continue to be the primary products generated by the county's agricultural industry.

One fun fact about Kiowa County is that it is home to the Big Well, located in Greensburg. The Big Well, at 109 feet deep and 32 feet in diameter, was once considered the world's largest hand-dug well when it was constructed in 1887-1888. It served as the primary water source for the community until 1932 and became a popular tourist attraction. The Big Well Museum and Visitor Center, which offers tours of the well and information on its unique history, is now an essential stop for visitors to the area.
