Stanton County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Kansas. The county was founded on February 27, 1873, and was organized on June 17, 1889. It is named in honor of Edwin M. Stanton, who served as the Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War.

The county covers an area of approximately 680 square miles (1,760 square kilometers) and has a population of around 2,200 residents, as of the 2020 census. The county seat and largest city is Johnson City.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Comanche. European settlers, mainly of German and English descent, began to settle in the area during the late 1800s, drawn by the availability of land through the Homestead Act of 1862.

Agriculture has historically been an essential part of Stanton County's economy, with wheat, corn, and sorghum being vital crops. Ranching, especially cattle and hog, is also a significant industry in the region.

Now, for a fun fact: Stanton County is home to the Cimarron National Grassland, which comprises 108,175 acres and is the largest area of public land in Kansas. The grassland attracts visitors for various outdoor activities, such as birdwatching, hiking, and stargazing, making it a wonderful destination for nature lovers.
