.Washington County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on August 25, 1855, and organized on September 6, 1860. It is named in honor of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The first European settlers arrived in the area around 1857 and primarily engaged in farming and ranching activities. In 1860, the first post office was established in Washington County. The county had a vibrant agricultural industry, maintaining a long-standing position as a top producer of wheat and corn in the state of Kansas. It is also the location of the Hollenberg Pony Express Station, which was built in 1857 as a stop for travelers headed to the gold fields in California.
