Calloway County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Kentucky and was established on November 3, 1822. It was named after Colonel Richard Callaway, an early settler and prominent figure in the area. The county seat is Murray, which was founded in 1823 and named in honor of U.S. Congressman John L. Murray.

Covering an area of 385 square miles, Calloway County is part of the Jackson Purchase region, which was acquired by the United States from the Chickasaw Indians through a series of treaties in the early 19th century, most notably the Treaty of Tecumseh in 1818.

Throughout its history, Calloway County has been predominantly agricultural with an emphasis on tobacco, corn, wheat, and livestock. In more recent years, the economy has diversified to include manufacturing and retail businesses.

Notably, Calloway County is home to Murray State University, a revered public university that was founded in 1922. It has grown over the years to become a significant educational and cultural hub in the region, drawing students and visitors from across the nation.
