.Fayette County, located in the bluegrass region of the great state of Kentucky, has a history that dates back to the late 18th century. Established in 1780 and named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who supported the American Revolution, Fayette County became the second county established in Kentucky.
Fayette County was originally part of the Virginia Colony, and Lexington, the county seat, was founded in 1775, predating the establishment of the county. Lexington quickly became an important trade center and hub for pioneering settlers venturing into the western frontier. As a result, the area received the nickname, "Athens of the West," due to its prominence in education, culture, and economic development during early American history.
