Fulton County is located in the far southwest corner of the state of Kentucky, right at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. It was established on January 15, 1845, when it was created from a portion of Hickman County. The county was named after Robert Fulton, an American engineer, and inventor famous for developing the first commercially successful steamboat, the North River Steamboat (also known as The Clermont).

When first established, the county seat was in the town of Fulton, but it later moved to Hickman in 1847. Hickman initially thrived due to its status as a port along the Mississippi River. The rivers granted the region strategic and economic importance, facilitating significant trade and commerce during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Fulton County's proximity to several rivers shaped its growth and development. Besides its role as a regional center for agricultural trade and transportation, the county also became home to various industries such as manufacturing and milling, driven by the presence of river ports. Consequently, the county boasts a rich history rooted in its unique geographical features and waterways.

A fun fact about Fulton County is that it is home to the "Pig Out Palace," which claims to have the world's largest pig sculpture. This interesting sculpture is located near the town of Hickman and has become a notable roadside attraction and symbol of the local pork industry.
